Dogs, Drink & Other Drivel
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.00 $While best known for his Old Duck Hunters Association magazine articles, Gordon MacQuarrie's primary career was as outdoor editor for The Milwaukee Journal from 1936-1956. Dogs, Drink & Other Drivel reprints for the first time many of his columns from that era. MacQuarrie favored springer spaniels and the first several chapters are dedicated to his writing of his own dogs, as well as writing of the sages of dog trainers at the time. Also included are many columns that were in essence first drafts for magazine articles that appeared in major sporting magazines. A chapter is dedicated to his extensive travels hunting and fishing from Florida to Alaska. Throughout there are stories that feature his "MacQuarrie Magic" style of writing, quick of humor and wisdom. A good subtitle for this book might be "The Further Adventures of Gordon MacQuarrie," in that most of the stories occurred after the death of Mister President, Al Peck in 1939. MacQuarrie needed to find other characters to populate his columns, and find them he did. You'll read about one David Nason, an expert fisherman and a rascal of first order- what else could you call a man who would throw a live porcupine into your boat? You'll read about the years of WW II, Ike fishing in Wisconsin, American Ace pilot Richard Bong. Stories from his beloved cabin on Middle Eau Claire Lake and of course stories on his continual devotion to "the old ways" are found here.
